TMU Hosted a Two-Day National Conference on Sustainable Agriculture
Teerthanker Mahaveer University successfully organised a two-day national conference focused on Sustainable Agriculture and Water Security with the vision of achieving Viksit Bharat 2047. The conference was conducted by the College of Agriculture Sciences and brought together experts, researchers, academicians, faculty members, and students from different parts of the country
The main aim of the conference was to understand the importance of sustainable development goals in agriculture, environment, and rural development while connecting them with India’s long-term growth vision. The event received 493 registrations, and around 378 delegates actively participated in the conference. This showed the growing importance of research related to Sustainable Agriculture and Water Security in India.
Eminent Experts Shared Valuable Insights
The inaugural session was attended by several respected guests, including Prof. S. P. Singh, Dr S. S. Biswas, Dr Gopal Krishna, and Dr K. S. Kanwal. Dean of the College of Agriculture Sciences, Prof. Praveen Kumar Jain, welcomed all guests and participants.
He highlighted the university’s environmental initiatives, including the operation of a vermicompost unit, sewage treatment plant, and effluent treatment plant within the campus. These facilities reflected the university’s commitment to environmental protection and resource recycling.
Dean of Academics, Dr Manjula Jain, emphasised the importance of academic innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable education. She also described millets as climate-friendly and nutritious crops that support sustainable farming.
Experts Discussed Climate and Water Challenges
Conference Organising Secretary Prof. Ganesh Datt Bhatt stated that the conference became a strong interdisciplinary platform for discussions related to agriculture, biodiversity, water science, environment, and rural development.
During the first day, Prof. S. P. Singh described the Himalayas as the “Third Pole” and stressed the need for its conservation. Dr S. S. Biswas connected Indian philosophical traditions with sustainable development goals and explained how the teachings of Lord Mahavir, such as non-violence, self-discipline, and non-possession, remained highly relevant for environmental balance today.
One of the major attractions of the conference was the session by Dr Gopal Krishna from the National Institute of Hydrology, Roorkee. He explained the scientific relationship between agriculture, water security, and climate-resilient development in detail.
More Than 300 Research Papers Were Presented
On the second day, technical sessions, oral presentations, and poster presentations were conducted. More than 300 research papers were presented by researchers and scholars on topics including sustainable agriculture, climate-smart farming, biodiversity conservation, water management, and rural livelihood development.
The conference strongly highlighted that the dream of Viksit Bharat 2047 could only be achieved through sustainable agriculture, conservation of natural resources, innovation, and active community participation.
