Educational Visit to Sports Authority of India by TMU Department of Physiotherapy Students
The Department of Physiotherapy at Teerthanker Mahaveer University (TMU) organised an educational visit to the Sports Authority of India (SAI) at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, New Delhi, for MPT (Master’s of Physiotherapy ) students on 18 February 2026. The visit was organised to provide students with practical exposure to national-level sports training, rehabilitation, and athlete performance management systems.
Expert Interaction on Sports Rehabilitation and Performance Enhancement
During the visit, students interacted with Dr Prahlad Priyadarshni, High Performance Analyst, and Dr Gyan, Physiotherapist at SAI. The experts shared insights into sports injury assessment, rehabilitation protocols, performance enhancement techniques, and scientific training principles followed in elite sports environments.
The discussion emphasised injury prevention strategies, recovery protocols, and the importance of a multidisciplinary team approach in competitive sports. Practical demonstrations involving elite athletes from cycling, wrestling, gymnastics, and other indoor sports enabled students to understand real-time applications of sports physiotherapy and athlete management.
Exposure to Exercise Physiology and Performance Assessment Tools
A key highlight of the visit was the demonstration at the Exercise Physiology Department. Students observed advanced performance assessment tools, including VO₂ max testing, endurance evaluation systems, and metabolic monitoring techniques. These sessions helped students understand how physiological parameters are scientifically assessed to optimise athletic performance and design effective recovery programmes.
Such hands-on exposure strengthened students’ understanding of evidence-based practice in sports physiotherapy and exercise science.
The students also had the privilege of meeting Brigadier Dr Bibhu Kalyak Nayak, Director, National Centre for Sports Sciences and Research, SAI, along with Dr Subhra Chatterjee (Medical Officer), Dr Shubhojit Chatterjee (Exercise Physiologist), and Dr. Shatrupa (Sports Psychologist). The interaction highlighted the integrated role of medical professionals, physiotherapists, psychologists, and performance analysts in managing and supporting national-level athletes.
Advanced Biomechanics and Anthropometry Demonstrations
Under the guidance of Dr Ajay, Biomechanical Analyst, students observed advanced motion analysis systems, force plates, and gait analysis technology used to study movement patterns and prevent sports injuries. The Anthropometry Department showcased body composition analysis, somatotyping techniques, and measurement procedures used for talent identification and performance monitoring.
Students also visited the wrestling arena, basketball court, and cycling training area, where they witnessed structured training sessions and professional sports infrastructure supporting elite athletes.
Conclusion
The educational visit to the Sports Authority of India proved to be highly informative and inspiring for TMU’s MPT students. The exposure to advanced sports rehabilitation techniques, performance assessment tools, and multidisciplinary athlete management systems successfully bridged the gap between classroom learning and practical application.
Through such industry-oriented initiatives, Teerthanker Mahaveer University continues to strengthen its position as a leading institution in physiotherapy education, preparing future professionals for excellence in sports physiotherapy, rehabilitation sciences, and high-performance athlete care.
