Teerthanker Mahaveer University (TMU), Moradabad, through its College of Agriculture and allied outreach units, demonstrates strong commitment to Clean Water and Sanitation specifically through Indicator 6.5.3, which highlights off-campus support for water conservation in rural areas. TMU actively educates and empowers villages and farmers in the Moradabad region and beyond to adopt practical, sustainable water management strategies
A signature initiative is rainwater harvesting guidance, provided through student workshops and field demonstrations. Local villagers are shown how to construct water storage units, using affordable tanks etc., enabling families to capture and store rainwater during the monsoon for year-round use. TMU faculty offer technical blueprints and ongoing advice to ensure installation and maintenance aligns with best practices.
Recognizing the need for scalable solutions, TMU also advises rural households and farmers on creating small farm ponds for water storage. This involves practical guidance on lining shallow pits with durable sheets a cost effective method that conserves water, and supports supplemental irrigation during dry spells. The university regularly promotes awareness on pond construction and judicious water use.
TMU’s crop management outreach emphasizes low water, high-yield seed varieties such as improved paddy (rice) suited for July sowing. Demonstrations and trainings highlight how early planting and drought-resistant seeds reduce irrigation needs throughout the season. TMU imparts integrated water saving practices like mulching, soil moisture retention, and alternate wetting/drying techniques to help the farming community maximize water resources and support climate resilience.
