Tmu’s CTLD Department Organises The Speechmasters 1.0 Competition
The Speechmasters 1.0 Competition, hosted by the Centre for Teaching, Learning, and Development (CTLD) at Teerthanker Mahaveer University, culminated in a grand finale on March 15, 2024, at the university's auditorium. This event showcased the exceptional public speaking talents of students from all 14 colleges within the university.
Purpose:
Glossophobia, or the fear of public speaking, is a widespread issue affecting over 75% of individuals globally, surpassing even the fear of death according to research conducted in America. Recognising the importance of overcoming this fear, CTLD organised the Speechmasters 1.0 Competition to boost the self-confidence of participating students. Prof. R N Krishnia, the director of CTLD, emphasised the significance of this initiative in his welcome address. By fostering self-confidence, self-esteem, and a positive attitude, students are better equipped to succeed in various aspects of life.
Conduct of the Event:
The Speechmasters 1.0 Competition comprised three rounds, offering participants comprehensive exposure to public speaking.
Round 1:
The screening round took place in October 2023 across different dates to accommodate the schedules of various colleges and programmes. A total of 248 students registered for the competition, delivering speeches on topics selected from a list of 15 options. The primary objective of this round was to evaluate students' communication skills and their ability to speak effectively in public. Following this round, 88 students advanced to the next stage.
Round 2:
Conducted on February 27, 2024, this round saw 61 participants out of the initial 88. Students delivered prepared speeches on topics of their choice, showcasing their stage presence and oratory skills. Judges, including Mr. Sidharth Singh and Dr. Geetanshu, evaluated each presentation, leading to the qualification of 34 students for the grand finale.
Round 3 (Grand Finale):
Held on March 15, 2024, coinciding with World Speech Day, the grand finale featured an impromptu round where students received topics just five minutes before their speeches. Dr. Shwetangana Santram and Dr. Neha Anand, along with Prof. Harbansh Dixit as the chief guest, assessed the participants' performances. The inclusion of impartial judges ensured fairness, with no affiliations to any college.
Winners:
Shivang Tyagi from the Agriculture College clinched the top spot, earning a tablet as the prize. Ujjwal Jain and Shambhavi Milind Kothiwal from the engineering college secured the second and third positions, receiving an Echo Dot and a Smartwatch, respectively.
