TMU Organises Heat Stroke Awareness Programme at Primary School, Manoharpur
Moradabad, 29 April 2025 — Teerthanker Mahaveer University (TMU), under the aegis of the National Service Scheme (NSS), organised a community outreach programme titled “Awareness on Heat Stroke” at the Primary School, Village Manoharpur, Moradabad. The event, held on 29th April 2025 from 9:00 AM onwards, aimed at sensitising young schoolchildren about the dangers of heat stroke and essential preventive measures amid rising summer temperatures.
The programme was hosted and coordinated by Mr. Harish Sharma, NSS Coordinator and Associate Professor, Department of Physiotherapy, TMU. Students from BPT 4th Year, BPT 3rd Year, and BPT 4th Semester actively participated in the campaign, marking their commitment to public health awareness.
Objective of the Awareness Campaign
The primary goal of the event was to educate children on the causes, symptoms, prevention, and treatment of heat stroke, a health condition that poses a significant risk during the peak of summer. The event was particularly pertinent given the current climatic conditions and increasing instances of heat-related illnesses.
Engaging and Educational Activities
During the interactive session, TMU’s Physiotherapy students explained to the schoolchildren how to:
- Stay hydrated throughout the day.
- Avoid exposure to direct sunlight, especially during peak hours.
- Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing to maintain body temperature.
- Identify early signs of heat stroke, including dizziness, excessive sweating, and nausea.
Students adopted an interactive teaching approach using simple language, visual aids, and relatable examples to ensure better understanding among the young audience.
Distribution of Informative Pamphlets
In addition to verbal instruction, the participants distributed informative pamphlets that included:
- Common symptoms of heat stroke.
- First-aid steps to follow in case of an emergency.
- Tips to stay cool and safe during extreme weather.
These printed materials served as a takeaway resource for students to share with their families and community.
Leadership Remarks and Community Response
Dr. Shivanee M. Kaul, Head of the Department of Physiotherapy, TMU, highlighted the importance of such initiatives:
“We aim to serve society by spreading health awareness. Heat stroke is a serious health concern during summers, and we strive to educate children from an early age so they can take care of themselves and their family members.”
The initiative was well received by the school’s administration. Mrs. Surekha, Principal of the Primary School, appreciated TMU’s outreach efforts, noting that such initiatives not only enhance children's health awareness but also foster responsible behaviour within the community.
Quiz Competition and Student Pledge
To reinforce learning, a quiz competition on heat stroke prevention was conducted. The winners were awarded prizes as a token of encouragement. The programme concluded with all attending students taking a pledge to follow preventive measures against heat stroke, symbolising their commitment to maintaining personal and community health.
