TMU Organised Guest Lecture on Suicide Prevention and Its Management
The Psychiatric Nursing Department of Teerthanker Mahaveer College of Nursing (TMCON), organised an offline guest lecture on “Suicide Prevention and Its Management” on 21 September 2026. The session was conducted at the College of Nursing, TMU, to improve students’ understanding of suicide prevention, early identification of warning signs and appropriate intervention.
The lecture focused on the importance of starting conversations about emotional and psychological concerns and providing timely support to individuals experiencing distress.
Expert Session on Suicide Prevention
The guest lecture was delivered by Dr. Lakshmi Kotamarthi, MBBS, MD (Psychiatry), TMMC & RC, Moradabad. She discussed important aspects of Suicide Prevention, including identifying warning signs, assessing suicide risk, early intervention, crisis management and supportive care.
Dr. Lakshmi also explained the role of healthcare professionals in preventing suicide and supporting individuals during difficult situations. She highlighted the importance of effective communication, reducing stigma and ensuring timely professional help and referral. The session carried the message “Start the Conversation”, encouraging students to understand the importance of listening, communication and timely support.
Lamp Lighting Ceremony and Addresses
The programme began with a lamp-lighting ceremony in the presence of dignitaries, faculty members and students. Prof. (Dr.) S. P. Subashini, Dean, College of Nursing, TMU, addressed the gathering and highlighted the need to create awareness about suicide prevention and develop a supportive environment for discussing emotional and psychological concerns.
Prof. (Dr.) M. Jasline, Principal, TMCON, appreciated the Psychiatric Nursing Department for organising the expert session. She emphasised that such academic activities helped nursing students develop the knowledge and skills needed to respond appropriately to mental health challenges. Prof. (Dr.) Suman Vashist, HOD, Psychiatric Nursing Department, welcomed the resource person and the gathering. She highlighted the importance of developing compassionate and responsible approaches towards people experiencing psychological distress.
Students Participated in Interactive Session
The lecture was attended by B.Sc. Nursing V Semester, PB B.Sc. Nursing 2nd Year, M.Sc. Nursing 1st Year and M.Sc. Nursing 2nd Year students, along with faculty members of the Department of Nursing.
An interactive question-and-answer session was also conducted. Students actively participated and raised questions related to suicide risk assessment, prevention strategies, crisis intervention and the responsibilities of healthcare professionals.
Conclusion
The programme concluded with a formal Vote of Thanks delivered by Ms. Arti Chaudhary, PG Tutor, Psychiatric Nursing Department, TMCON, TMU. She expressed gratitude to Dr. Lakshmi Kotamarthi for sharing her expertise and thanked the university and college leadership for their guidance and support. The session provided nursing students with practical knowledge about Suicide Prevention and the importance of timely communication, support and professional intervention.
