TMU Conducts Breastfeeding Awareness Campaign Empowering Women with Health Education
Teerthanker Mahaveer Medical College & Research Centre (TMU) successfully organised a week-long awareness campaign to mark World Breastfeeding Week under the global theme “Prioritise Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems.” The initiative, spearheaded by the Department of Community Medicine, began with an awareness program in Bagadpur village and concluded in Hasanpur village, focusing on educating pregnant and postpartum women about the importance of breastfeeding, correct techniques, and associated health benefits.
Community Outreach and Educational Sessions
Through audio-visual demonstrations and interactive counselling sessions, common myths around breastfeeding were addressed. The Paediatrics Department also held multiple activities throughout the week, engaging mothers, students, and the public in an informative and participatory manner.
Special awareness sessions were conducted for breastfeeding mothers and caregivers, led by faculty members, who discussed the nutritional and immunity-boosting benefits of breastfeeding, correct feeding positions, and strategies to overcome common challenges. Participants found the guidance highly beneficial.
Student Engagement and Creative Awareness Tools
A poster-making competition for medical students highlighted the benefits of breastfeeding and busted prevalent myths through creative visual content. The posters were displayed in the maternal and child wards, reaching patients and visitors, while the best entries were awarded.
Simultaneously, MD Community Medicine students and MBBS interns visited households to conduct health talks, ensuring direct interaction and spreading awareness at the grassroots level.
Leadership Support and Closing Ceremony
The closing ceremony saw the presence of Principal Prof. V.K. Singh, Vice Principal Prof. M. Maitreja, and Dean Prof. S.K. Jain, all of whom emphasised the role of breastfeeding in promoting maternal and child health. The event was organised under the guidance of Dr. Sadhana Singh (Head, Community Medicine Department), with on-ground coordination by Dr. Lalpa Reddy and program leadership from Dr. Rupa Singh (Head, Paediatrics) and Dr. Aditi Rawat (Program Coordinator).
This initiative reinforced TMU’s commitment to community health education by empowering women in both rural and urban areas with the knowledge and confidence to adopt optimal breastfeeding practices.
