TMU attended the 11th Youth Festival in Bhopal on Anti-Leprosy Day

In a country like India, where leprosy is misunderstood as a contagious and hereditary disease, the need for accurate information becomes paramount. This lack of scientific knowledge not only perpetuates fear but also leads to discrimination and ostracization. The Youth Against Leprosy (YAL) programme, initiated by the Sasakawa-India Leprosy Foundation (S-ILF), aimed to address this issue by empowering the youth. The YAL programme took place from January 26 to 29, 2024, at the Oriental Group of Institute campus in Bhopal.

Event Details

The YAL programme focused on the age group of 16 to 25 years, recognising the potential of youth as effective catalysts for social change. By harnessing their energy and enthusiasm, the programme aimed to create brand ambassadors who would champion the cause of leprosy eradication. Faculties and students of Teerthanker Mahaveer University actively participated in the event with great enthusiasm.

Objectives of the programme

The Youth Against Leprosy (YAL) programme has a multifaceted approach aimed at raising awareness among college students and youth about leprosy, dispelling myths, and fostering empathy. Utilising the youth as messengers, the programme sought to break the cycle of misinformation and prejudice. Participants were empowered to become ambassadors against leprosy stigma, fostering a sense of responsibility and advocacy. The programme also provided a platform for sharing success stories, encouraging participants to showcase their understanding of broader social issues. Through collaboration with partner organisations, especially educational institutions, the YAL programme aimed to broaden its impact and create a more inclusive and informed society, actively contributing to the eradication of leprosy-related discrimination.

Event Activities

The event began with an introduction among participants, facilitated by professionals to break the ice. This set the stage for a collaborative and engaging experience. Participants engaged in activities under the supervision of professional trainers, using acts or dances they prepared themselves. This mentorship fostered creativity and self-confidence.

Participants delved into brainstorming sessions, developing creative ideas to tackle challenges related to youth, stigma, and discrimination. These ideas were presented through art forms like dance or theatre. The event incorporated competitive activities, recognising winners for each creative endeavour. This added an element of excitement and achievement.

Guest Attendance and Media Coverage

The final event was attended by guests, students, and members of civil society, ensuring widespread coverage through the media. This further amplified the programme's impact. Participants were motivated by receiving citations and prizes for their creative and impactful activities during the event.

S-ILF and Its Mission

The Sasakawa-India Leprosy Foundation (S-ILF) is dedicated to eradicating leprosy-related discrimination. By organising the YAL programme, S-ILF aims to engage and empower the youth to contribute to this cause actively.

To combat misinformation, collaborations with various colleges and educational organisations are essential. This one-time event aimed to mobilise and educate young citizens in collaboration with different institutions. Recognising that children and youth are the future of the country, efforts to eradicate stigma and discrimination must target their minds and attitudes while they are still being formed.

The success of the event

The Youth Against Leprosy (YAL) programme is a commendable initiative by S-ILF, empowering the youth to become ambassadors against leprosy stigma. By fostering understanding, creativity, and collaboration, the programme aimed to create a ripple effect, influencing society at large. The YAL programme is designed to bring about positive changes in participants' perceptions, motivating them to spread awareness and eliminate stigma upon returning to their families, friends, and institutions.
