Obesity: The Global Health Challenge

A guest lecture on "Obesity: The Global Health Challenge" was organized at TMMC&RC on 15th of May, 2019. Prof. Dr Hemant Nautiyal MS FIAGES FALS (Bariatric), Fellowship in Bariatric Surgery, Dept. of Surgery HIMS Jolly Grant, Dehradun was the key speaker at the event.

During the lecture, Dr. Hemant Nautiyal told that Obesity is one of the most neglected health problems of the 21st Century, which lead to diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. More than 1.9 billion adults are overweight and 650 million are obese. Approximately 2.8 million deaths are reported as a result of being overweight or obese.

He also said that the prevalence of obesity in India has doubled, in less than two decades. Recent data shows that (obesity in India) 13% to 50% of the urban population and 8%-38.2% of the rural population. Intensive medical management and lifestyle changes have failed to demonstrate substantial and sustained weight loss and improvement in obesity-related diseases. Bariatric/ Metabolic have emerged as a preferred treatment for these patients.
