BCME Workshop at TMMCRC: Training for New MBBS Curriculum

Basic Course in Medical Education (BCME) held at TMMCRC. The Basic Course in Medical Education (BCME) was successfully conducted by the Medical Education Unit (MEU) at TMMCRC, under the Regional Center of SRMSIMS, Bareilly, from October 5th to 7th, 2023. This three-day workshop aimed to sensitize faculty members about the significant changes in the New MBBS Curriculum, which was implemented in August 2019 for the New MBBS Admissions from 2019 onwards.

The primary objectives of the workshop were to:

1. Inform faculty members about the changes in the New MBBS Curriculum.

2. Train the trainers to become effective facilitators in the new curriculum.

 

The workshop received guidance from the National Medical Commission (NMC) Observer, Dr. Jaswinder Singh, who is also the MEU-Coordinator and Convener of the Regional Center at SRMSIMS, Bareilly.

A total of thirty faculty members from various streams were registered for the program in accordance with the guidelines provided by the NMC. The program was conducted by the Medical Education Committee Members and Curriculum Committee Members, including:

- Dr. Priye Suman Rastogi, Professor of Ophthalmology

- Dr. Sudhir Singh, Professor of Microbiology

- Dr. Prachi Singh, Assistant Professor of Pathology

- Dr. Vivek Singh, Assistant Professor of Pathology

- Dr. Prithpal S Matreja, Professor & Head of Pharmacology and MEU Coordinator

 

All the resource faculty members had received training from the Regional Center/Nodal Center for the Revised Basic Course Workshop and AETCOM Training/BCME since 2015.

The program participants were selected as follows:

- 4 participants from Phase I Departments

- 3 participants from Phase II Departments

- 23 participants from Phase III Departments

 

The workshop at TMMCRC covered a wide range of topics, including:

- Introduction: Ice-breaking and Group Dynamics

- Learning Process, Learning Domains, and Principles of Learning

- Goals, Roles, and Competencies

- Learning Objectives (LO) in CBME

- Teaching-Learning Methods (TLM), including Interactive Large Group and Small Group Methods

- Introduction to Assessment

- Internal Assessment (IA) and Formative Assessment

- AETCOM: Concept and Conduct

- SDL: Concept and Conduct

- Effective Clinical and Practical Skill Teaching

- Aligning TLMs for Objectives and Competencies

- Assessment Planning and Writing Essay Questions and MCQs

- Writing a Lesson Plan

- Assessment Planning and Quality Assurance

- Matching Assessment to Competency, Objectives, and Learning – Workshop

- Assessment of Clinical and Practical Skills

- Academic Growth and Networking

- Aligning Assessment to Competency and TLMs

- Mentoring

- Drafting Schedule for a Phase Based on Competencies

 

The training program comprehensively covered all aspects of the new curriculum, from defining objectives to connecting them with teaching-learning methods and, finally, assessing the related competencies. Faculty members were also informed about their new roles as facilitators and how to fulfil them. The workshop provided in-depth insight into new concepts such as electives, early clinical exposure, and skill assessment, with ample opportunities for discussion and participant feedback.

 

The participants were also briefed about changes in the assessment methods and the importance of integration in the new MBBS Curriculum. This BCME workshop at TMMCRC marks a significant step in ensuring that faculty members are well-prepared to navigate the changes in medical education.
