18th Enlightening Session Under Leadership Talk Series Held at TMU

Teerthanker Mahaveer University organised the 18th session of the Leadership Talk Series (LTS) on April 1, 2026, at the University Auditorium. The session featured Hon’ble Former Chief Justice of India, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, as the distinguished speaker. He delivered a deeply reflective and intellectually enriching lecture on “From Courtroom to Nation Building: Leadership Lessons from the Judiciary.” 

His lecture was very insightful and easy to understand. One of his key messages was that “the judiciary speaks through its judgments, not speeches.” This idea helped students understand how court decisions impact society.  He explained how the judiciary plays an important role in shaping the nation.

The session started with a traditional lamp lighting ceremony. Hon’ble Former Chief Justice of India, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, along with Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. V. K. Jain, Dean Academics Prof. Manjula Jain, and other distinguished members of the university, lit the lamp. This ceremony symbolised the beginning of knowledge and wisdom. It created a positive and respectful environment for the session.

The University honoured Justice Uday Umesh Lalit for his contribution to the Indian judiciary. The session was led by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. V. K. Jain, Prof. Manjula Jain, Prof. Harbansh Dixit ( Dean-College of Law & Legal Studies), Prof. M. P. Singh (Dean Student Welfare), Prof Amit Kansal, Prof Sushil Kumar (Principal-College of Law & Legal Studies), and Prof. Navneet Kumar (Principal-College of Paramedical Sciences). The moment was filled with pride and respect, and the audience welcomed him with warm applause.

About the Eminent Resource Person

Justice Lalit is a former Chief Justice of India with a strong legal background. He has been part of many important judgments, including the historic judgment declaring triple talaq unconstitutional

During his tenure as Chief Justice, he introduced important reforms, such as live streaming of court proceedings, and worked to improve the efficiency of the judiciary.  He continues to contribute to legal education as a visiting professor. His remarkable journey and contributions make him a true embodiment of leadership, integrity, and nation-building.

Justice Lalit explained that the judiciary is not just for solving disputes. It also helps in building the nation by protecting rights and maintaining justice. He emphasised that nation-building is a shared constitutional responsibility, where the judiciary stands as a vigilant guardian of constitutional morality.

One of the most powerful and enduring messages of the session was his assertion:

“The judiciary speaks through its judgments.” In essence, judgments become

the living voice of the Constitution, shaping both present realities and future possibilities.

  • Maneka Gandhi Case – Expanded the meaning of the right to life.
  • Kesavananda Bharati vs State of Kerala – Introduced the Basic Structure Doctrine.
  • Indra Sawhney Case – Supported reservation for social equality.
  • T.M.A. Pai Foundation Case – Helped improve the education system.

Leadership Lessons

He shared simple but powerful leadership lessons:

  • Be honest and fair
  • Take balanced decisions
  • Follow values and principles
  • Have courage in difficult situations 

Justice Lalit highlighted that the youth are the future of the country. He encouraged students to focus on education, values, and responsibility. He advised them to become aware citizens and contribute positively to society.

Students and faculty members actively participated in the session. They asked meaningful questions about law, leadership, and the Constitution. The address concluded with a standing ovation, a testament to the profound impact of Justice Lalit’s insights. At the end of the session, the University presented a memento to Justice Lalit as a token of appreciation to express the TMU’s deep sense of gratitude and appreciation for the distinguished presence and invaluable insights. This moment symbolised not only a gesture of thanks but also the University’s recognition of Justice Lalit’s exceptional contribution to the discourse on constitutional values, leadership, and nation-building.

Prof. Harbansh Dixit shared concluding remarks and thanked Justice Lalit for his inspiring session. He said the lecture gave students a better understanding of law and leadership. He emphasised that such interactions serve as a powerful source of inspiration for students, particularly those aspiring to build careers in law, governance, and public service.

Courtesy Meeting with Hon’ble Chancellor

After the session, Hon’ble Former Chief Justice of India, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, paid a courtesy visit to the Hon’ble Chancellor Shri Suresh Jain and the Executive Director Shri Akshat Jain. The Hon’ble Chancellor and Executive Director warmly welcomed Justice Lalit and expressed deep appreciation for his insightful and impactful address.

The meeting focused on creating better learning opportunities for students. The meeting provided a meaningful opportunity to exchange ideas on the intersection of law, education, and nation-building.
