Awareness Programme On Cervical Cancer
An Awareness Programme on Cervical Cancer followed by a Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination Camp was organized at Teerthanker Mahaveer University (TMU) Hospital with the objective of promoting awareness about cervical cancer prevention and the importance of early vaccination. The event witnessed the enthusiastic participation of around 250 students, faculty members, and healthcare professionals, reflecting the university’s strong commitment to advancing public health and preventive healthcare practices.
The program began with a formal inaugural session where the importance of cervical cancer awareness was emphasized by senior faculty and medical experts from TMU Hospital. The speakers highlighted that cervical cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer among women, primarily caused by persistent infection with high-risk strains of the Human
Papillomavirus (HPV). Despite being largely preventable, it remains a significant public health challenge due to lack of awareness and screening, especially in developing regions.
Awareness Session and Vaccination
During the awareness session, specialists from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology delivered informative talks on causes, symptoms, early detection, and prevention of cervical cancer. Students were educated about the role of regular Pap smear screening, safe sexual practices, and vaccination in reducing the incidence of the disease. Emphasis was also placed on lifestyle factors, nutrition, and hygiene that play a crucial role in maintaining reproductive health.
A key highlight of the event was the administration of the HPV vaccine, a scientifically proven preventive measure against cervical cancer. The vaccination camp was organized under the supervision of trained healthcare professionals and nursing staff. Participants were informed about the benefits, dosage schedule, and safety of the vaccine. The medical team ensured proper counseling prior to vaccination, addressing any doubts and misconceptions among the students.
Interactive Discussion and Outcomes
The interactive format of the session encouraged open discussion, allowing students to seek clarification about HPV infection, vaccination age, and long-term protection. Faculty members underscored that vaccination, combined with routine screening, provides a strong defense against cervical cancer and can significantly reduce mortality rates among women.
The program also aimed to instill a sense of social responsibility among the students, encouraging them to act as health ambassadors by spreading awareness about cervical cancer prevention within their families and communities.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by the organizing committee, expressing appreciation for the collaborative efforts of TMU Hospital, medical faculty, nursing staff, and the participating students. The success of the program was evident from the positive feedback received, as participants found the session highly educational, practical, and impactful.
Through this initiative, Teerthanker Mahaveer University reaffirmed its dedication to promoting Sustainable Development Goal 3 – Good Health and Well-being, by integrating education, prevention, and healthcare delivery. The awareness programme and vaccination camp not only enhanced students’ knowledge about cervical cancer but also demonstrated TMU’s proactive role in protecting and improving the health of its academic community and society at large.
