6.5.7 Promoting Conscious Water Usage in the Wider Community

Teerthanker Mahaveer University (TMU), Moradabad, is deeply committed to promoting conscious water usage and water conservation both on campus and throughout the wider community, with a special focus on leveraging its National Service Scheme (NSS) units for outreach and impact:

Community Engagement and NSS-Led Outreach

  • NSS Water Awareness Campaigns: NSS volunteers at TMU regularly conduct water conservation awareness programs in surrounding communities, educating local residents about rainwater harvesting, judicious use of water, and responsible sanitation practices. These efforts extend beyond campus — NSS students visit villages, schools, and local organizations, spreading the message of water consciousness and providing demonstrations on best practices.
  • Tree Plantation & Environmental Drives: NSS-led tree plantation campaigns align with the goal of improving groundwater recharge and ecosystem health. For instance, on World Environment Day, NSS coordinated a large tree plantation initiative, linking afforestation directly with water sustainability.
  • Hands-On Activities and Skill-Building: NSS volunteers actively participate in rallies, water body clean-up drives, and “Swachhta Pakhwada” events, where they engage with the community to promote responsible water disposal and conservation. These experiences equip students with hands-on skills and empower them as young ambassadors of sustainability.
  • National Seminars and Youth Motivation: TMU hosts national seminars and invites renowned experts (e.g., River Man of India) to inspire public involvement in river conservation and groundwater preservation. These events mobilize youth, local leaders, and stakeholders to view water management as a shared responsibility.
  • Sustainable Campus to Community Model: TMU’s advanced circular water management and zero liquid discharge systems are showcased as best-practice models for visitors and community groups — demonstrating how efficient campus water stewardship can be replicated at household and village levels.

Institutional Commitment

  • Sustainable Green Campus Initiatives: TMU’s infrastructure rainwater harvesting, large-capacity storage tanks, STPs, ETPs, and smart irrigation—sets a practical example for visitors and community groups, reinforcing the educational value of institutional water responsibility.
  • Volunteerism for Social Change: NSS at TMU is a platform for student leadership, social responsibility, and direct community engagement, providing a steady flow of water stewardship ambassadors for the region.
