6.5.6 Promoting Conscious Water Usage on Campus
Teerthanker Mahaveer University (TMU), Moradabad, actively promotes conscious water usage and conservation across its campus through a robust set of initiatives:
Rainwater Harvesting and Lake Storage: TMU has established a large rainwater harvesting lake with a capacity of 1 crore liters. Rainwater collected from rooftops and campus surfaces is used to recharge the groundwater table, ensuring water sustainability year-round.
Sewage and Effluent Treatment Plants (STP/ETP): Advanced treatment facilities recycle nearly 80% of all wastewater for daily use in agriculture, horticulture, campus grounds, and landscaping. This circular water management system achieves zero liquid discharge (ZLD), preventing any untreated water from being released into the environment.
Water Saving Technologies: Sensor-based automatic water control systems regulate and optimize distribution, while regular audits and maintenance prevent wastage and leaks.
Green Campus Initiatives: Thousands of trees, green zones, and landscaping absorb treated water and contribute to campus aesthetics, climate resilience, and environmental consciousness.
The University maintains expansive lawns, gardens, and roadside plantations with a focus on native tree species to promote ecological balance. Regular tree plantation drives, especially on World Environment Day, contribute to a thriving green zone with species like Neem, Peepal, Gulmohar, and Ashoka. TMU’s green landscaping integrates eco-friendly walkways, water-efficient irrigation from recycled resources, and aesthetic horticulture displays across the campus. These continuous efforts reflect TMU’s commitment to creating a serene, environmentally responsible learning environment.
