Poverty remains a critical global challenge, with at least 10% of the world’s population living in extreme poverty, unable to meet basic needs such as food, healthcare, education, and access to clean water and sanitation. Universities have a unique role in alleviating poverty by providing education, promoting social mobility, and acting as economic and innovation hubs within their communities. Teerthanker Mahaveer University (TMU) addresses SDG 01 through targeted initiatives for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, including scholarships, fee concessions, mentoring, and academic support programs. Beyond campus, TMU promotes local economic development via its Business Incubation Centre, offering mentorship, training, and financial assistance to sustainable start-ups. Community outreach initiatives, including health camps, vocational training, and skill development workshops, further enhance access to basic services for underserved populations. By integrating education, financial support, community engagement, and policy participation, TMU demonstrates measurable impact in poverty reduction, promoting equity, social inclusion, and sustainable development across campus and the surrounding region.
