TMU Marks World Environment Day with Tree Plantation Campaign
On the occasion of World Environment Day 2025, Teerthanker Mahaveer University (TMU), Moradabad, organised a tree plantation programme under the banner of the National Service Scheme (NSS). The event aimed to promote environmental awareness, foster ecological responsibility, and contribute to a greener, healthier campus.
TMU Leadership Highlights the Importance of Environmental Protection
The tree plantation event witnessed the gracious presence of university dignitaries, including Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) V. K. Jain, Prof. Manjula Jain, Dean Academics, Dr. Nishith Mishra, Director IQAC, Dr. Amit Kansal, Associate Dean, and Prof. M. P. Singh, Dean Student Welfare.
In his keynote address, Prof. (Dr.) V. K. Jain, Vice Chancellor, TMU, emphasised the critical role of environmental preservation and shared the university’s long-standing commitment to ecological welfare. He noted that since the establishment of the university, over 200 trees have been planted annually, in alignment with the Chancellor’s vision of transforming the entire campus into a lush green zone.
Prof. Jain stressed the indispensable value of trees in human survival:
“We may survive for a few days without food and water, but not without air and oxygen. Trees help balance our environment and are essential for humanity’s progress.”
He elaborated on how trees absorb carbon dioxide and release life-giving oxygen, offering fruits, flowers, medicinal resources, and shelter to birds and animals. “Trees are true friends of humanity,” he added, reminding the audience of the cultural and spiritual significance trees hold in Indian tradition.
A Call to Action: Technological Priorities vs Environmental Needs
Prof. M. P. Singh, Dean of Student Welfare, delivered a compelling message on the urgent need for active environmental participation. He remarked:
“Imagine if trees could emit Wi-Fi signals — we would plant so many more of them. Sadly, because they only provide oxygen, we tend to neglect them.”
He stressed that if humanity aspires to live healthy, sustainable lives, planting more trees is no longer optional, but essential. He highlighted how trees not only provide oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide but also purify the air by absorbing other harmful gases, thereby reducing air pollution and supporting a healthier atmosphere.
NSS-Led Tree Plantation: Species, Participation and Impact
NSS Coordinator Dr. Ratnesh Jain outlined the goals and significance of tree plantation campaigns, stating they enhance environmental consciousness, social cohesion, and sustainable development. He called for regular engagement of all community segments in such green initiatives, which serve not only the present generation but also ensure a stable ecosystem for future generations.
As part of the campaign, several plant species were sown across the university campus, including:
- Neem
- Peepal
- Gulmohar
- Sheesham
- Ashoka
- Siris
- Mango
- Pilkhan
- Amaltas
- Gamhar
- Arjun
- Silver Oak
These species will contribute significantly to biodiversity and ecological balance within the TMU environment.
Dental College Also Participates in Green Initiative
On the same day, TMU’s Dental College and Research Centre also carried out a dedicated tree plantation activity, reinforcing the university-wide commitment to environmental stewardship.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Prof. M. P. Singh, who appreciated the collective efforts of faculty, staff, and student volunteers. Notable attendees included Assistant Registrar Mr. Deepak Malik, Dr. Arpita Tripathi, Shivanki Rani, and NSS student volunteers.
