Silver Fillings Become Obsolete: TMU Hosts Workshop on Natural Dental Treatments
Teerthanker Mahaveer University’s Dental College and Research Centre recently hosted a specialised workshop focusing on Composite Restoration and the Plated Matrix System—two advanced technologies reshaping modern dental practices. The session was led by Dr Nikhil Bahuguna, a renowned dentist from Delhi, who provided in-depth insights to BDS and MDS students about the evolving trends in dental restoration.
The Decline of Silver Fillings in Modern Dentistry
Dr Bahuguna highlighted a major shift in dental care: the move away from traditional silver fillings, which are gradually becoming obsolete. He pointed out that silver fillings are not only aesthetically unappealing but also compromise the natural structure and appearance of teeth. Countries like the United States have already imposed restrictions on the use of such materials due to associated risks, and India is witnessing a similar transition.
The workshop introduced students to Composite Restoration, a modern alternative that mimics the natural colour and strength of real teeth. These composite materials are not only long-lasting but are also free from harmful elements like mercury, commonly found in silver amalgam fillings.
Live Demonstrations and Student Engagement
A key highlight of the session was the live demonstration performed by Dr Bahuguna using an artificial jaw model. This hands-on approach allowed students to observe the step-by-step process of applying the new technique, earning praise and engagement from attendees.
Responding to student queries, Dr Bahuguna elaborated on the clinical benefits of this method. He emphasised its minimally invasive nature, superior aesthetic outcomes, and enhanced preservation of the natural tooth structure. According to him, the composite restoration technique not only ensures patient safety but also provides greater comfort and satisfaction.
Leadership and Participation
The event was chaired by Prof. Manjula Jain, Dean of Academics at TMU. Also present were Dr Neelam Jain, Director of Governance, Dental College; Dr Pradeep Tangde, Principal; and Dr Ankita Jain, Head of Department, alongside several faculty members and students.
Dr Ankita Jain, in her address, remarked that such modern dental innovations are a significant leap for future dental professionals and will prove to be a boon for patients as well.
A Step Towards Global Dental Excellence
The core objective of this workshop was to familiarise students with globally accepted dental technologies, and it succeeded in delivering both theoretical knowledge and practical exposure. The university’s commitment to academic excellence and technological advancement in healthcare was clearly reflected through this initiative.
