Meaningful Initiative for Mental Health Awareness at TMU
Teerthanker Mahaveer College of Nursing recently organised a special guest lecture emphasising the importance of mental health. The lecture, centred on the theme “Stress Adaptation and Its Management”, aimed to raise awareness among nursing students and faculty about the physical, mental, and behavioural symptoms of stress. The session also motivated participants to adopt positive coping mechanisms and encouraged the development of emotional intelligence and mindfulness.
Inaugural Ceremony and Key Addresses
The programme commenced with a ceremonial lamp lighting, attended by distinguished guests and faculty members. Prof. (Dr.) S. P. Subashini, Dean of Nursing, in her address, highlighted the crucial need for stress management in the demanding field of nursing. She stressed that recognising stress symptoms early and taking appropriate measures can help maintain mental balance and work efficiency.
Prof. (Dr.) M. Jaslin, Principal, motivated students to confront internal stresses and build mental resilience. Similarly, Vice-Principal Prof. Ramnivas described stress as a common life experience that requires wise management.
Expert Insights from Psychiatrist Dr. Prerna Gupta
Following the introductions, Prof. (Dr.) Suman Vashisth formally welcomed the guest speaker, Dr. Prerna Gupta, MD, Psychiatrist at TMU Hospital, appreciating her contributions to the field of mental health.
Dr. Gupta delivered an engaging and impactful lecture highlighting the identification of physical and psychological signs of stress. She emphasised how stress affects behaviour and professional performance, especially underscoring its significance in the responsible profession of nursing.
She recommended various techniques for coping with stress, including meditation, breathing exercises, time management, and cognitive reframing. Additionally, she underlined emotional intelligence as a vital tool for managing workplace challenges.
To enhance practical understanding, Dr. Gupta incorporated real-life examples and case studies, making the session both insightful and motivating.
Recognition and Conclusion
At the conclusion, Dr. Prerna Gupta was honoured for her valuable contribution. The programme ended with a formal vote of thanks expressing gratitude towards the organising committee, the guest speaker, and the participants.
Approximately 200 students from the GNM second year and BSc Nursing sixth semester, along with 10 faculty members, attended the session. The event successfully imparted comprehensive knowledge on the significance of mental health and practical strategies to manage stress effectively.
